KEAR was contracted to provide construction services to expand the existing Type III Hydrant Fueling System at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. Barksdale AFB serves as the home to America’s 2d Bomb Wing, the oldest bomb wing in the air force and home to the B-52H Stratofortress bomber. The project included the demolition of 6 abandoned fuel hydrant pits and approximately 400 LF of associated piping. The project also included over a half-mile long fuel hydrant loop with approximately 4,400 LF of fusion bonded epoxy coated carbon steel pipe, installed in accordance with ASME B31.3, severe. Additionally, 6 hydrant pits with respective 4″ hydrant control valves, and 4 HPV / LPD pits were installed. The fuel system extension was tied into the existing system using double block and bleed plug valves housed in a newly placed vaults. Additional modifications to the existing system, included testing and balancing and plane loading performance testing. This project was performed adjacent to an active military runway and apron with no construction related impacts to flight operations.
